I use the free version of ZoneAlarm. I was having problems with connecting to the internet so I added 127.0.0.1 as "trusted zone" and now it is fine but I am wondering whether it is safe or not. I don't have my dns or anything else in the 'trusted zone' except the adapter and loopback adapter.

127.0.0.1 is the local host which I guess is my own computer, so when I surf the web would my security be compromised because 127.0.0.1 is now part of the trusted zone?

Oh and Windows Explorer had access to the internet before and now I have disabled that and the internet seems to be fine. Is there any reason why explorer.exe should have access to the internet?

You will be fine/safe with having local zone added. No need for explorer to access the net ever (not that is bad that it can but it is better not).
