I had an email from Microsoft today, inviting me to try the Pre Release Candidate #1 of Vista. I downloaded it and burned the DVD, and got a fresh hard drvie, unhooked my XP drive and did a clean install on the new drive. What a difference from the first Beta! It installed in 15 minutes and runs so much better that I'm using it right now to make this post! The first Beta caused so many problems for my eMachines T3092 with 2GB Ram and 128 MB Nvidia GPU that I took it off the machine on the second or third day. But this is the same machine, same specs, and it's running beautifully! The only disappointment is that the DVD center reports that my video card doesn't support DVD's ( but it does in XP). I noticed that on a fresh drive when you install Windows 2000, it takes a little over a gig of space. When you install XP fresh, it takes over 3 gigs of space. You install Vista on a clean drive and it takes about 9 gigs of space!
