My first try at a website was with FrontPage, the online tools weren't available. They seem ok, but all look pretty much alike. I wanted something a little different, so I had to learn more.
There are some great HTML tutorials online. Set up a directory and start building your own web page on your computer. Don't worry about servers and scripts until you can get a little multi-page site going

Hello,
Best way to learn web design the PROPER way:
http://w3schools.com/
Don't be tempted to use frontpage - it's POS. Use international W3C standards.
Well, good luck.

I couldn't agree more. For one thing, you can tell at a glance that a site was made by FrontPage. And if you have viewed source for a site made be it or GoLive or the other WYSIWYG editors, you can see the mess they make.
Notepad is the way to go for a person who want's to say he knows HTML or CSS. It's not that hard if you learn from the start to close everything you open. _________________ Websplasher website design. Design with a splash.

I'd like to give my opinion after trying to learn how to do a web page. I think it used to be very easy with FrontPage. But not only is it not a good program, it really no longer exists. It's outdated and things have changed since then. So really not an option. Learning HTML and CSS is a pretty long process, so take it calmly and go little by little. And non-professional people will probably never go much beyond basics. Since the beginning of web pages when it was ever so simple, things have really gotten complicated for the non-professionals. Understanding the different browser behaviors, for example. I use an editor called Aranae. I really like it. Better than note pad. More features. And there is a WYSIWYG editor called Kompozer which is pretty good, but most of all it has a forum with very kind and knowledgeable people who help each other out a lot without making you feel stupid. Some people find the open source CMS to be easy and useful, although I have never been able to. I also second the other advice given here.
