Thanks Paul Smile

When is the last day to enter?

Got voted to ask you by others. Very Happy
Then I got to ask why Cyberdefender - $35,970, www.cyberdefender.com here when they seem to be a bad site because are blocked by my hosts file and then are said to have Adware.

CyberDefender has an adware supported version of the product, whereas the one in the contest is not ad-supported.

Contest runs til the 22nd. Which hosts file do you run?

CyberDefender folks assured me prior to going public about the contest we're getting the non ad-supported version.

Curiously, which one has the domain null routed?

Hosts file blocks...
CyberDefender.com
and
www.cyberdefender.com and this one has a comment [Rogue/Suspect]
and other with cyberdefender in the name.
cyberdefender.qarchive.org
news.cyberdefender.com

So lets hope they are non ad-supported version.
Don't know if I would trust getting sofware from them even if there was no ads or malware. You still want a good program that works without lots of false reports or bugging you to upgrade to another verions.

OK I understand that, but my question is which hosts file blocks the domain?

Ok Hphosts blocks...
CyberDefender.com
toolbar.cyberdefender.com
news.cyberdefender.com
cyberdefender.qarchive.org

cyberdefender was not in MVPS HOSTS or Mike's Ad Blocking Hosts files.

http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
See cyberdefender listed here inder other names, sites and note at site.

At the end it says...
Rogue/Suspect list and can no longer regard the program to be "rogue/suspect."

Thanks for the information. And good note to read too:

Quote:
Note on CyberDefender: We originally listed CyberDefender on this page out of concerns that the vendor behind the product was the same company that previously released Spyblocs/eBlocs, an application with a bad history of aggressive, deceptive advertising and illegal force-installs. Although we found no major problems in our initial testing with CyberDefender beyond false positives that were quickly cleaned up, and while the vendor itself halted the sales of Spyblocs and vowed not to repeat the same mistakes with CyberDefender, we decided out of caution to impose a three month probation period before we would consider re-testing and, if warranted, de-listing the the product from the Rogue/Suspect list. During that three month probation period we monitored the behavior of the company. When we encountered a spurt of advertising for the product through adware, we refused to de-list the product and imposed a second three month probation period. At the end of the second three month probation period we re-tested CyberDefender, again finding no problems serious enough to justify listing the program on this page. As we have observed no advertising of the product through adware for many months, and as the program itself exhibits no problems serious enough to warrant listing on this page, we have decided to de-list CyberDefender from the Rogue/Suspect list and can no longer regard the program to be "rogue/suspect."

Like I said, when I had a discussion with them prior to going live in the contest, it was made known to me the product donated is the non-ad supported version.

I haven't used it, but it sounds to me like this is akin to the ad-supported version of Opera versus the non-ad supported Opera. I could be totally wrong in this assumption. Prior to the launch I also ran a search engine query on the name and did not find any bad marks against it. Just last night I re-ran the same query and didn't find any bad marks against it.

If SWW is no longer listing it as rogue/suspect, I'd be curious why Hphosts continues to block it?

So my question here is, is there something wrong with the CyberDefender product? If there is, then we'll have to deal with it accordingly.

At any rate, I wasn't aware of the SWW notice. A search engine query did not reveal the rogue list in the first few pages at least.

With that said, PIRT feeds CyberDefender our phishing URLs.

----

Afterthought, I recall now in my discussions with Alex Eckelberry that his brother worked for a company that was seen as adware. I'm not sure if this was the company mentioned. But in my time of working with them for PIRT, we have experienced no issues.

Hi All:

I think the note on Spyware Warrior regarding CyberDefender should speak for itself -- while it was once on the list, it is no longer. That's not to say that I recommend the product or am happy about the avertising-supported nature of the trial product. But it is no longer on the Rogue/Suspect list.

Paul,

Over here at the Official hpHosts support forum I posted about the contest.
http://hphosts.mysteryfcm.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=85

Not sure if you can see if not a member.

n addition to the SWW RSASP, adware fits the criteria .... Wink

http://www.cyberdefender.com/free.html

The "affiliate" (advertiser) is clearly shown in the download URL for CD;

http://www.cyber-defender.com/EDC/download/1/?affl=cdsite_edc&campaign_code=029849

Removing the affl and campaign_code part of the URL still leads to a download page, but not a working download link

As the adverts therefore are clearly third party, this means CD must be classified as adware ....

I've no idea why it was originally listed, but the above is enough to satisfy the criteria IMHO

So your guess is as good as mind if the software is ad free and or something that can be trusted even if nothing bad shows up in a search.
For me there pass history is all I need to know to not trust them. But that is my 2 cents on it.

Thanks Eric for the response. hewee, thanks for bringing this topic up. I have pinged the CEO of CyberDefender asking him to join in the discussion.

hewee, perhaps CyberDefender would be willing to let you test the product to see what it does. Then you can report back to us what your findings are. I'm sure this will satisfy your and others curiosity.

This test needs to be independent, and I'm concerned about your stated issue with their past history. You'd have to look past that and see their current product of course.

A search on "Cyberdefender EarlyDetectionCenter 2.0 " I only get 2 hits.

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Cyberdefender+EarlyDetectionCenter+2.0+&btnG=Search

And from that info there is not much there.

You say they are giving away "EarlyDetectionCenter 2.0 "
From here http://www.cyberdefender.com/products.html I can see that it seem to be the same as "CyberDefenderFREE 2.0 - The All-Free Internet Security Suite." that I guess has ads.

At the bottom of the page you see "EarlyDetectionCenter 2.0 " but a;; I see is the buy button and it says $11.99 for a full year subscription.

So even if it is ad free what happen after a year?

They may be ok now and getting feed back from them would be nice also.

But no way will I test out there software or can I if I wanted to because I am using windows 98.

What are the system requirements?
# Windows XP/2000
# Internet Explorer 5.0/6.0
# 25MB disk space
# 512MB of ram

Found more info after clicking support.
http://www.cyberdefender.com/cgi-bin/support/kb.cgi?cat&query=CyberDefenderFREE%202.0&lang=en

Lots of FAQ but it is for CyberDefenderFREE 2.0 and not "EarlyDetectionCenter 2.0"

How can I hide the ads in CyberDefenderFREE 2.0?

Quote:
How can I hide the ads in CyberDefenderFREE 2.0?
You can remove ads in CyberDefender Free 2.0 by clicking on "Hide Ads" link. Then following the instructions by upgrading to the full version of CyberDefender Early Detection Center. Once you've upgraded you will be able to activate CyberDefender 2.0 and remove all hidden ads.

So it does sound like it is ad free. But you get a year on the subscription so like I said what happens after the year?

Just got off the phone with one of the CD folks... they are at RSA currently and once they have time will come in here and respond.

Be nice to hear what they have to say.

Because to me it seems the adware is installed if CyberDefenderFREE 2.0 that has the adds turns into EarlyDetectionCenter 2.0 that does not have the ads but is based on the subscription fee.

The cost they list it at is $11.99 for the software and that is what the subscription fee is to turn off the ads.

Cyberdefender EarlyDetectionCenter 2.0 3000 $11.99 $35970
