While attempting an upgrade from Windows 98SE to Windows XP Home Edition, the "Set-Up Program" locks up during the 1st Step . . . Collecting Information. I have left my PC running for 12 hours during the process with no changes in this time frame. I have 512 MB of RAM, an INTEL P4, and a 60 GB HDD with only 5.4 GB used. If I remove the XP upgrade installation CD and reboot, Windows 98SE returns to my desktop with all operations or programs running as usual. Windows 98SE runs very fast and there are no hang-ups anywhere within the system. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated by this frustrated computer owner . . . Leecherous . . .

Hi...
This may or may not make a diference but are you running the setup program after Windows 98 has booted or are you booting with the XP CD?
If the former, try the latter.
Just make sure your boot order in the BIOS is set to CD-ROM first.
Let us know if you would...
Best Regards...

Yes, I did boot up with the Windows XP Upgrade CD and I did not boot up to Windows 98 prior to installation time.

Hi...
Looks like you are having a hardware or software incompatibility issue. Here is a page at Microsoft's site that might have information related to your particular issue. You may also need to install 3rd party drivers during the installation for SCSI or RAID by pressing F6, if you have these type of devices.
You can also try taking out various cards and devices (and possibly replacing them) to see if that pinpoints the "offender."
There are other resources available at Google.
Let us know if you still have any problems...
Best Regards...

Thanks for the help and suggestions on curing my Windows 98SE to Windows XP upgrading problem. I've decided to scrap the old computer (over 7 years old) and I'll simply purchase a new replacement. I'll probably buy a new HP model with hopes that Windows Vista isn't more of a headache . . . Leecherous

Thank you ... ardvarkishereagain ... I'll take your suggestion by checking in with a local community center who might appreciate an old computer-that-works donation.
