|
|
I have the latest (ver 7.0) McAfee Internet Security Suite installed and updated. When I try to update the software/definitions it appears to be working but the task tray icon which shows it is updating never appears.
I think a DLL file is missing but I reinstalled it and it did not correct itself.
Any ideas? Thanks.

Did you run the McAfee Virtual Technician to see if it could find anything wrong?
Did you run the newest McAfee uninstall tool after using Add/Remove Programs to clear all registry traces before resinstalling?
It is also necessary to delete all remaining McAfee files, including the application data folders on each Windows user account.
McAfee forums could give you the most consistent help, with quick links to needed tools.
Good luck. I recently got VirusScan Plus, and it's a beast. I bet the complete suite is even more beastly! _________________ OldRebel

Thanks Old Rebel. I had already done all those things you mentioned.
It turned out the problem was not with McAfee after all. I had inadvertenly turned off a Microsoft service which caused the problem.
Once I turned it back on everything works. Thanks for you response, it is what makes Castle Cops such a valuable resource.
Problem is soved and McAfee is working again.

I am sorry to say I can't find the dll file I enabled. I found it by following the instructions on this help document from Mc Afee:
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/displaydoc.asp?frames=1
I just can't find if I even wrote down what fixed it.
Perhaps following the above will help. Sorry.

Thanks for your help, but that link doesn't seem to be good anymore. Do you remember the name of the help document?

I don't know which document he was referring to, but take a look at this recent document, that has a link for a new uninstall tool needed to fix browsing and updating problems:

Funny, I checked the link yesterday and it was working for me. The one that Old Rebel recommends may be even better or may have even replaced the one I referenced. At any rate, reinstalling may indeed solve the problem. Try that and if not email me and I will cut and paste the old document to you.

Well, I did the reinstall after the July 31 update debacle and that didn't change the update icon issue (which I had before the reinstall). I also followed the instructions here (the services.msc check, registry tweaks and folder deletion):
http://ts.mcafeehelp.com/faq3.asp?docid=407802
Is that the document you were referring to? Unfortunately that didn't work either. I've had the missing update icon issue since I initially installed McAfee through Comcast in April. Just as you experienced, my updates seem to be coming through ... I just have no feedback during the process.
Sorry to dwell on this - I appreciate your help.

Yes that is the document. Man, I wish I could help you.
I think I just stumbled upon it while looking at the
Windows services run but unlike my usual process I failed to write down what I did. Now I cannot remember.
Perhaps if you just look at services and reenable them one at a time after looking at their descriptions you might get it fixed. Meanwhile I will re-review and see if I can find a log or any other indication of what I did to fix it. Keep up the faith. I am dumping McAfee after my subscription runs out iin Oct. It seems to have too many problems and use too much resource and time. I have Comodo on my wife's machine and it along with a good antivirus product does just as well. Good luck.

I have actually been pretty satisfied with the Comcast McAfee suite - and it's free with my service. I switched from Norton AV - which was a huge resource hog (I had about a five minute bootup time) on the advice of one of my Silicon Valley techie friends. The only issues I have with McA are (a) the initial slow scan speed ... which I have fixed (see below); (b) the update debacle; the update icon issue; and (d) the inability to customize a scheduled scan - so I only do Manual Scans now.
So I am returning the favor and sharing my #1 tip for improving McA performance. Add the Throttle Registry Key Value described at the end of this page:
http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=120763
It improved my scan speed by about 300%! Hope this helps and don't give up on McA yet.
Thanks again.

Thanks DRData for the tip. It seemed to help a little but I am troubled by all the running processes in McAfee.
Comodo has a much simpler interface and seems to do a better job and it's free. So I may still opt out. But thanks for your tip.
I am not sure about this but I seem to recall I stopped the Microsoft service called Alerter when I had my problems with the McAfee update icon. You might try it and then turn it back on if it doesn't work for you.
Good luck.
