My DVD-ROM is only intermittently recognised when accessing DVDs/ CDs. The remainder of the message reads:
"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"
I have uninstalled and re-booted which solves the problem sometimes. On other occasions the PC will display, say, all of the tracks on a CD, artist, track name, time etc...but cannot read the data
I have no conflicts and the device is working properly according to device manager
I have plugged in a second CD-ROM, as a slave, and this works only intermittently too.
Any thoughts guys

Please follow these instructions carefully:
Open Notepad by clicking on Start, then Run, and entering the word:
Notepad
in the run box. Next tap <Enter>. Open the Notepad Format Menu and uncheck Word Wrap. Then copy and paste the following code in GREEN to Notepad:
| Code: | Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]

Next, Click on the File Menu, then Save As ... and click on the drop down menu to change the file type to All Files.
Next navigate to your desktop, and enter the file name fix.reg, and click Save.
You should now find a new file on your desktop named fix.reg. Right click on fix.reg and select Merge from the context menu. You will get a warning, agree to the merge, and then a message the file has been merged will immediately pop up.
Then reboot. See if that fixes it. _________________ Don't read? Can't learn!

I have booted the PC up today and checked for system errors. There are many listed for CDROM. A link to Microsoft indicates the error may be cable based.
The PC maufacturer is to send a new cable.
Hopefully this will resolve the issue.

One new IDE cable later and...the same result.
In Event Viewer I get a warning which reads thus:

The latest development is a new DVD RW (Lite-On) which sounds like a Stuka dive bombing - most unnerving. The same cdrom errors appear in Event Viewer.
The PC manufacturer suggested re-installing XP. We tried this and received the following:
File\i386\halaacpi.dll could not be loaded - the error code is 4
So I presume that re-installing XP with a dodgy DVD ROM is going to be a challenge.
Considering I have replaced the DVD ROM, the IE cable and updated the drivers does anyone think this could be a motherboard issue? The PC manufacturer replaced the MOBO after a previous HDD problem that could not be identified/ resolved.
This is all becoming very frustrating. The trash can is looking very inviting!
Any thoughts guys?

Thanks...I will go and pester a neighbour.
In the meantime I swapped from Primary IDE to Secondary IDE and XP does not pick up the DVD drive. In the Bios Primary says [None]...which seems right...but Secondary flashes [LT]. Does this seem right?

DVD ROM/RW works OK in a neighbour's PC
I'm going to visit Lite-On's website for some drivers.

It is now!
After updating the drivers from the Lite-On site I now have D: DVD-RAM in 'My Computer'...whereas before it said D: CDROM.
I also have no errors in event viewer.
Thanks to all for your input.
Hopefully I'm not tempting fate but this thread can be closed.
Cheers

I spoke too soon...it's all gone teets oop. I had to re-install XP and naturally it failed to load a number of files from the dodgy DVD writer...a large number of files.
The PC is to be returned to the manufacturer even though it is out of warranty...methinks they know something I don't...afterall it hasn't worked properly since they had it in for the prior MOBO problem.
If I ever get to know what caused the problem I will post back...but you may be as bored of this tale as I am

The MOBO was faulty and replaced FOC.
