I have not posted a private message in over a year. I would not want to now if it weren't for a friend sending me a private message, to which I would like to reply. However, now when I attempt to send a private message I get, "Sorry but the administrator has prevented you from sending private messages". I've tried emailing the admins, sending message via the feedback link, and posting to the tail of topics with recent admin activity. I have not received any reply regarding these attempts. I just want an explanation as to why I am restricted to public messages only

Thanks a ton. I did give a certain user a pretty good R rated tongue lashing over a year ago. The user in question showered me with insults in private messages, so I responded in kind. The difference is that said user "reported" my private message to the admins. Robin knew about the nonsense regarding the private exchange. The last I head there was no problem with the mess aside from the nefarious user, who has since been banned from the forum, making public what was said in private. Again this was over a year ago and that is the main reason I'm at a loss regarding my current restriction.
