Hello. I have questions about the two avgrssvc.exe's for AVG Internet Security Suite. Is it normal for one of them to run so high at 63K of Mem Usage in Task Manager? And is the other one, which only runs around 1.2K, used for self protection? Thanks.

Hi duke, I suppose that you mean Mbytes (and not K). You are right, the first one is loaded upon system startup, the second one is a system service that performs some checking.

Thanks kodl and I guess I meant 63,000K of memory in Task Manager. The Virtual Memory shows lower and the CPU Usage is at 0. No slowdowns so I imagine it's ok, but it is kid of high isn't it? a-squared Anti-Malware only ran around 32, 000K and Spyware Terminator the same when ever I used either one of those instead of the Antispyware Component in the AVG ISS. Jut curious what other peoples Memory Usage is.

AVG IS has a database for the AV and AS engine in memory. That explains why memory numbers may seem high. But the most important thing is that the memory shown in the Task Manager is working set, not a physical memory used by the process. Depending on system memory usage and memory assigned to other apps, this is what the system assigned to the process based on its estimates (what will be best for the process from the performance point of view). Also, the working set amount includes memory that is shared among several processes in each of the process' totals. I.e. if process A and process B share 10MB of memory, it will be accounted for both A and B (making a total of 20) even though the real memory used is only 10M. That is why the memory usage in Task Manager should not be taken too seriously. And I did not even touch the issue of memory used in kernel mode by drivers ... Wink

I really don't worry that much about Mem Usage in Task Manager as long as the System Idle Process is between 98 and 99, which I have read is good. Also PC doesn't seem to be slow. However the avgrssvc.exe is now up to 87,100K as it shows in TM. It just seems extraordinarily high compared to when i used other AS Applications with only the AVG AV Component installed and not the Spyware and Firewall Components in the Security Suite. Spyware Terminator and a-squared AM were both under 40K. I guess my question is this. Why should I run the Anti-Spyware Component in AVG ISS, if I can use an alternative AS Program that uses less memory like Spyware Terminator? Or is the protection that AVG Antispyware offers worth the high memory usage? I am not trying to be a smart *** here, but 87K just for one process seems very high.

87Kb is less than one Mb. How many Mbs of RAM do you have? I'd say anything that uses less than a megabyte to run is pretty lean. You need 1024 Kb to make 1 Mb.

It drives me nuts that Microsoft has so much memory usage amounts (esp. in XP) in kilobytes when the rest of the planet, long ago started using megabytes and gigabytes. doh!

I have a Gig of RAM for example. I therefore have 1,048,576 kilobytes of it. 87 Kb doesn't even show up on the scope. Wink
