Hi,

I run AVG pretty much every day and it always comes back clean. But it always detects a change in C:\windows\system32\shell.dll. I was just wondering if this was a problem.

The rest of my antimalware software (includeing rootkit detectors), find nothing. I also ran an online scan that found nothing.

Thanks for any help.

Hi monkeyjump,

This is not a problem - AVG will also flag kernel32.dll, user32.dll and ntoskrnl.exe as having changed. These files get changed as Windows works, especially after updates have been applied.

It is possible to stop the messages about these files. Open the AVG Test Centre (right click the AVG icon in the system tray and select 'Launch AVG Test Centre') and press F3. As each message about a file change appears, check the box next to 'Do not show this dialog box again', then click 'Confirm Changes'. However, there is really no need - I like to see all the messages to let me know AVG is doing its stuff.
