I've noticed a large amount of cpu activity in avgw.exe just in the past few days. It looks like it is doing a background scan or collecting data but there's not an interface that indicates it. If I select a scan it seems to continue, so I don't think it's the normal scan feature. Anyone else notice this?

Hmmm. It has curiously stopped doing this.

Please see another post on a similar topic - it might be the same issue with a scheduled on-demand scan running in the background.
