Keep old versions of .NET Framework or uninstall them?

When I visit the Windows Update website, it always offers me .NET Framework 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0 as non-critical updates.

After digging a bit, I found that I have .NET Version 1.0.3705.6060 and .NET version 1.1.4322.2407 installed (aparently the latest updates of V. 1.0 and 1.1). I also read somewhere that there will be no more updates/patches for version 1.0.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;829019 says "You may have several versions of the .NET Framework installed on your computer. Each version of the .NET Framework can co-exist with the other versions on the computer." and "Most of the time, you can use the latest version of the .NET Framework to run applications that were created by using earlier versions of the .NET Framework."

So, I'm confused. Should I install version 3.0 and leave the older versions in place on the off chance that something on my computer will need .NET version 1.0 or 1.1? Or should I uninstall the older versions as a safety measure in case an exploit is discovered that targets them? And is there any reason to install Version 2.0?

I'm running WinXP Home on one computer and XP Pro on another.

Thanks.

It's going to get a bit more confusing.

Newer versions of NET framework are designed to be backward compatible. However, Microsoft has documented instances where this was not so.

To install version 3.0, you need to have version 2.0 installed.

If it were my computer, I'd leave the older versions in place.

Hmmm... Well, the fun continues....

At the end of installing .NET Framework version 3.0, my firewall told me Print Filter Pipeline Host wanted access to the internet:

    Application: Print Filter Pipeline Host
    Full Path: C:\Windows\system32\spool\prtprocs\w32x86\printfilterpipelinesvc.exe
    Local address: 0.0.0.0: 1076
    Remote Address: 8.12.206.126:80
    Connection: TCP connection
    Direction: out
I denied access.

When I went back to Windows Update after rebooting, "Update for Windows XP (KB934238)" (an update for .NET version 3.0) was listed as a high-priority update, but I've tried three times to download it and instalation always fails.

Do you know anything about "Print Filter Pipeline Host" trying to access the internet during .NET Framework instalation or "Update for Windows XP (KB934238)" not wanting to install?

The KB is an update for non-English versions of XP. If you don't need it / it is not marked as critical, then don't bother trying to install it.

the Print Filter Pipeline Host is something that seems to happen with lots of machines installing .NET 3.0 - another thread at another forum asks pretty much the same thing - as long as it is at the end, you can deny it and it should be OK, according to the other posts - some AV solutions seem to also block it *during* .NET 3.0 installation, forcing the user to *allow* it in order to complete the installation.

Conclusion: I decided to skip the balky KB934238, and proceed with instalation of "Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 Service Pack 1 (KB929300)". When I did, the Windows Update site took KB934238 off my suggested updates list, so apparently the service pack either included it or tweaked whatever was making the site think I needed it.

Problem solved, and as far as I can tell, I'm now as current as I can get on XP updates.

Thanks for all your help.
