System: Windows XP Media Edition (current Windows Update),
freshly installed status/post intrussion event.
Symptoms:
Startup list reports an odd file scheduled for renaming in temp folder.
See attached complete startuplist.
McAfee A/V unable to update, even after several rounds of reinstalling software as per McAfee support instructions.
Strange Event Log behavior: Sometimes not logging events specified for auditing.
Unknown cause of following System Event Log entry:

Have you added any new hardware or software recently? What version of McAfee are you running?
Can you post the offending startup entry(ies)? I don't open attachments due to the inherent threats. mrsugg, I checked the list yesterday afternoon - standard text file HJT log. In the wrong place, and not being a certified HJT analyzer, I can only say it *looks* like every thing is OK in terms of start up entries, but that is as far as I got.

Thanks for getting back to me so soon.
Excuse my ignorance; after I had sent the HJT startup list as an attachment in the original post I realsized I might have been better served to have included it in the original post message itself. So, I've included it below.
The box was comprimised by a worm or an intruder, and had to be completely rebuilt; which was accomplished from orginal CD media. Then internet connectivity was established through a new Verizon Broadband USB modem. With internet access I proceeded to run Windows Update repeatedly until no further updates were being suggested.
I also added the latest total protection package from McAfee.
Security Center v8.0
VirusScan v12.0
Personal Firewall v9.0
SiteAdvisor v2.6
Anti-Spam v9.0
Privacy Service v10.0
EasyNetwork v2.0
DataBackup v1.2
In addition, I ran secpol.msc and added auditing, password compelexity requirements and lockout times, as well as implementing a more strick security and user privilege policy than the hisecws template.
This is a stand alone XP box. I have received events indicating that the ipselpol could not be applied.

Would suggest I have an empty A/V database, which leaves me with the same issue, namely, McAfee fails to update it's database, despite numerous calls to McAfee support, and several rounds or installation/removal/re-installation of McAfee.
And McAfee is erroniously reporting everything is fine from the McAfee Security Center.
Perhaps this is a loaded question, but does the group have a concensus on a suite of security products that are known to be reliable? I've grown tired of the standard response from McAfee to simply reinstall their product. It would seem hard to imagine that if my system were clean that their product would have such a fragile installer.

Hi,
You said that you reinstalled the system after you were infected. Did you completely format and reinstall or did you do an in-place install?
McAfee isn't good Anti-Virus software anyway, because it takes up a lot of resources (many people think they're infected with malware as their system is slow, but they just have McAfee or Norton), it has poor detection rates, and is sometimes unstable (like now). Here is a really good article on security software:

Maybe you should think about changing of security software.
