I am getting a FALSE POSITIVE on a file in a program I have been using for years. I am sure - no matter what AVG says that it's a valid file.
Is there a way to set AVG FREE to permanently ignore flagging a file as a virus?

There doesn't appear to be a way to set the AVG free version to ignore a particular file.
You may wish to recheck the file to verify it is not infected and send a copy to AVG and ask them to adjust their definitions so the file will not show up as contaminated in future updated definitions. See:

There is no such feature in AVG Free. Exceptions and other advanced features are available only in the full editions.
If you suspect a file to be false positive, please follow the instructions given here, also listed in the sticky post - send to virus@grisoft.cz ...
