I've only run a company website for about two years now and I am shocked at the amount of nonsense that goes on with the internet these days.

All of the messages that are in the forums about the rediculous spam that people start getting happens to me, I probably get over 150 of them a day. I want to know why nothing is done about it? Probably because, honestly, what can you do about it?

I've found that most of these scam emails come from uncivilized 3rd world countries. Even the few i've caught from the united states who tried to comment spam me, when I try to report them to their isp, most of the time being comcast, they just don't want to deal with you. I've been blown off by comcast and several other isps when trying to tell them "look someone is using your service to illegally spam the internet".

I personally, and I'm sure many of you are in the same situation, cannot use over agressive spam filters on my email box. If I do I won't get emails from certain places, and it would hinder my business. So I basically have to sit here and take 150 spam messages a day because of this.

I personally banned all 3rd world countries from my website, and amazingly enough, the comment spam almost stopped completely, though I still get the email spam because they already have my email address. China and Hong Kong are probably the two countries I got spammed from the most. I completely believe they should be removed from the internet until they can clean their act up.

I wonder why that's not possible? Because people would consider it descrimination or something to that effect. However, I think there should be some kind of globally adopted standard, and if your country won't participate in that standard, than they cannot access the internet. Plain and simple, the standard should invoke severe criminal penalties for sending dirbag spam and comment spam to websites. If your country doesn't want to make these things a criminal offense, than that country doesn't belong on the internet.

There also should be more requirements when purchashing a domain. They should require more information, rather than these jerk websites that offer domain names for 1.99 and will sell them to anyone. That's how these morons get different websites every 5 seconds, because they are too cheap, and too easy to get.

I'd personally favor a high raise in the cost of purchasing domains so that the dirtbags are slowly drowned out by high costs, then they couldn't afford to buy 500 domains just to put up scam websites for penis enlargement

It's a real shame the internet has got to this point, and there isn't enough being done about it. This website is awesome, kudoos to you guys because you are trying to fight the battle everyone needs to fight together, the battle against these filthy @*(bags that want to steal and rob from everyone, rather than getting off their 3rd world @#)( to go get a job and earn a living![/code]

You raise many great points in your post.

It will never be possible to prevent all spam begin sent from all sources. The best solutions today involve filtering at the mailserver by the ISP. It's an ever-escalating arms race between the spammers and the mail server admins. With the proper tools, the end user spam leak rate is small, with minimal false positive blockage. Unfortunately, the best solutions require continuing labor or commercial subscription updates to catch evolving spam. The SIRT team here and many other organizations do their best to make life difficult for spammers - particularly those who illegally invade others' computers to send spam.

Effective open source solutions would be ASSP or SpamAssassin. Effective paid solutions would be Barracuda (although they are being sued by Trend Micro).

The 'big 4' : Comcast / AT&T / Charter / Roadrunner do care in a sense. Their abuse desks are optimized to prioritize and process standardized report formats such as SpamCop, etc. Comment spam is still spam but they require more resources to analyze reports in multiple formats. I don't know if they have web forms to report comment spam and collect the basic facts in the proper format, but this would help. Another problem is that comment spam doesn't lend itself to automatic reporting as spam does - so there are not as many reports for a particular problem computer.

It used to be much worse a few years ago. China was forced to begin to monitor and clean up its networks in order to continue to transact commercial business over email. But there still remains a huge problem. I don't know if this is because a small percentage of computer users there spam, or if their computers are taken over by foreigners and used to spam. There are so many computers in China that a small % with unpatched vulnerabilities is still a huge number. And perhaps since they don't speak English as a native language, they are more susceptible to going to a malicious web site for something as simple as trying to play a DVD on Vista Home Edition (which can't even play DVDs.)

There have been papers proposing a 'clean internet' and 'dirty internet', which would require networks / countries to meet certain standards to meet to avoid being banished to only the 'dirty internet'. Unfortunately, I think that solution is mostly academic at this point.

The sad part is that many fraud domains are simply paid for with stolen credit cards. The free/cheap providers hesitate to add barriers to registration because this results in fewer web sites and less income. If a free/cheap web host is the only one to raise the barrier, both the criminals and customers will gravitate to more open web hosts.

Thanks for the kind words! Very Happy

Have a look at this http://www.spamhaus.org/statistics/countries.lasso

As long as top US ISPs like Comcast, Roadrunner, and SBC Global let their users run malware-infected machines, the US will always remain the top spamming country. Cutting off China and Hong Kong will just protect Chinese Internet users from US spam Smile

There are some very effective spam filters around. I personally use Cloudmark Desktop for Outlook, and it successfully filters about 99% of all my spam, with almost zero false positives (about one or two in a year).
