|

I have 2 x 1Gb USB memory keys I bought from Staples in the UK and a 2GB SD card. They are Staples own brand manufactured by intuix (www.intuix.net). My main reason was for storing a large number of jpeg images for playback on my digital photo frame. I am also using one stick just for general data storage and because the files are less I haven't had a problem with this.
I have found however that all is not so simple because if I try to write multiple files I find that after so many I get an error saying that the file or folder cannot be created. The point at which this happens seems to vary. The only way so far that i have found to be able to achieve what I want is to copy a complete folder to the root, although I'm not sure this will work everytime.
I did contact Intuix but they haven't had the courtesy to even acknowledge my message.
I have been browsing for info and there seem to quite a few people who have come across the same issue. Quite a few solutions for the SD card centre on using the card with digital cameras so do not apply to Windows. For the rest I haven't been able to find any definitive answer although it does seem it could have something to do with the maximum number of files/folders that can be created from the root directory when using FAT32, which what the cards are set for. I should mention I haven't been able to format them to NTFS through the normal Windows process.
I just been looking at eBay and see there are 8GB sticks for sale now and I wondered if anyone had come across the problem and if so if they managed to find a way around it. There seems little point getting a high capacity device if it can't be used to it's full potential.

The error I get is Cannot copy (name of file): The directory or file cannot be created.
I had the problem initially with the first key I bought so thinking this was faulty as I got the same problem on more than one PC, including my laptop, I had it exchanged but the problem happened with the new key.
In the meantime I bought a 2GB SD memory card also from Staples (also Intuix) and thought I'd give that a try but same problem. .
The point at which this happened varied, anything between 112 and 237 files having been successfully copied and occurred whether I did a Select All copy, block copy or individual copies. I had only used about 107MB on the USB memory key so had around 800 MB available. I was using a 56 to 1 card reader/writer. I have also bought a different card reader/writer but again inconsistent results
Once this happens it's not possible, as far as my testing showed, to be able to copy any files without getting the error. I tried a format but Windows wouldn't allow it although it showed the right capacity and FAT32 file system.
I am using USB2.0 ports.
Haven't checked the Anti-Virus question you raised but I do have Comodo Anti-Virus with On-Access Scanner enabled. How can I check if this is affecting things?
The actual individual file size is around 923KB, they are only digital camera images.

are there any errors or warnings in eventviewer logs? If you try with less files, there should be a sweet spot where the errors don't occur, does the same happen? It could simply be that the usb devices can't sustain the speed erroring out. USB devices that are rated for Vista Ready Boost, i guess, would allow better performance and assuming there are no other hardware issues
