Recently purchased Maxtor SATA/300 - 500gb

My pc- dell/quad core 3.2ghz-intel/2gb ram/nvidia vid card...

It came with windows xp, i had it installed on another hd...

so i took it out and tried installing windows xp on this one... here is what happens

It boots up to the hard drive so i hit f12 to the boot menu and select boot from cd, it goes to the screen that says click enter to install windows or "r" to repair , i click enter... and it freezes there .. completely locks it up... what am i doing wrong??

thanks

Two things.

1. New HDD's often have to be formatted before you can use them.

2. If the version of Windows is an OEM that was pre-installed on the Dell, it may not be installed on another HDD at the same time

I doubt that it's the HD needing to be formatted first. The windows installer will do that as required. I expect that it's a matter of the correct driver for your HD not being included with the windows cd. You'll need to put the HD drivers on a floppy and near the start of booting the installer, chose F6 to allow loading the drivers from the floppy.
