My problem is that whenever i click on my local disk C:\ on My Computer, i get a "C:\ Access is denied" message. I can open my drive C:\ by typing it on the address bar and by exploring it. I can also access all the files and folders inside the drive. The only problem I see really is that I can't click C:\ from My Computer.

It's been a while since I've last accessed C:\ from My Computer so I can't really point out when exactly the problem started. The only drastic thing I've done with my laptop so far is install an Ericsson PC suite (which I've already uninstalled to see if that was causing the problem but it wasn't). I've also tried a system restore but I don't know how far back I should go since, again, I can't point out exactly when the problem started.

I'm also logged in as an administrator and I've granted myself total access to everything. I've run an antivirus and antispyware and I've cleaned up my registry using CCleaner but all these didn't seem to do anything.

I'm running Windows XP SP2 with an NTFS drive.

Thanks

Try accessing your C: drive from My Computer while in Safe Mode.

Since I doubt that this is a hardware issue, I've moved this topic here.

So you're running Vista then? It's possible that "Users" permission has been dropped for some reason. Run in admin mode and see if the problem disappears. If so, the perms for C: will have to be modifed to allow regular users to access the drive.

i'm running windows xp sp2.

i've been to the security tab while in safe mode and i've granted total access to all my accounts. when that didn't work, i deleted all the other accounts except for the admin but that still didn't work. i've also tried the advanced button of the security tab but that made it worse. C:\ opens but it's totally blank and this time an error message appears along with access denied and i can't move my files.

i undid it and now i'm back with the "c:\ access is denied" message box and everything can me moved and edited. except for this one file located in my c:\.

Hi jervis0...Welcome to Castle Cops..!

The security tab is not shown by default on XP w/NTFS...

To reveal the Security tab...
Open Windows Explorer>>Tools Menu>>Folder Options>> On the View tab... scroll to the bottom of the 'Advanced Settings' and clear the check box next to 'Use Simple File Sharing.'>>Click OK...The security tab should now show under properties...See if this also solves the access issue..

Hi jervis0,

Are you using Norton..? If so check this solution...

Access Denied, Drive C" after installing Norton SystemWorks

Another option you can try...Set up a new user account giving administrator rights to it...see if you can access 'c' from that account...

hey a_cup

no, i'm not using norton. i'm using avg antivirus. i've tried looking for a solution for my problem and one of the pages that came up did suggest something about norton but, unfortunately, that wasn't applicable in my case.

i've also tried your other suggestion and i've created a new user account but that didn't work either.

i've granted administrator, groups, users, and system accounts full access while i was in safe mode but still i get the access is denied message.

any clue? Very Happy
