OK here is what happens..please help!!
I turn on the computer and all is well. I see the normal startup screens, green light on the monitor no problem. Right after the windows startup screen the monitor looks like it goes into sleep mode. The yellow light comes on and the screen goes black. I hear all the normal windows sounds assosciated with windows starting but have no video.
Any suggestions? I have tried 2 different monitors and get the same results.

I had the same problem the other day when I was working on a PC that I was repairing at work.
What I found was the problem... not specifically saying that this is your problem.
The person told me that they had to 'warm' up their hard drive to get their computer to work. What they said was.. if they turned their computer on.. they would hear fans and nothing else.. sometimes windows would start, other times nothing. But if they left their computer on for several minutes and restarted it.. it would work fine.
I had a sevearl avenues to take on this one... hard-drive failing? Video card failing? motherboard failing? RAM failing?
Firts thing I did was to check the power-supply. YEP, the power supply was bad. How long were they using the bad power supply? He told me several weeks to months. What else did this power supply damage, I wondered. Hopefully nothing.
I checked the hard drive performing diagnostics on it.. It was fine, the controllerer was fine.
(still nothing)
I removed the memory, checked it out.. that was fine.
(still nothing)
I checked out their video card.. it was an older 3DFX card.. but was still working fine.
What the F, I was thinking.
The last thing I looked at beofre testing the MOBO was the processor and heatsink.
Pulled the heat sink off and what did I find.. It wasn;t seated properly and there was no thermal compound (Quicksilver) holding the heatsink to the CPU.. it was a long shot. I tested how hot the CPU was getting.. put a dab of quick silver on it.. reseated the heatsink & fan.. booted up the system and everything is working perfect.
So.. moral of the story...
Check your CPU to see if it is overheating.
buit check everything else first to make sure they are working and seated properly...

Thanks Tank, it isnt the heat sink or CPU I built this system myself less than a year ago.
It is a very strange problem as the monitor goes to sleep in the same spot very single time (right after the windows startup screen).
I had the computer turned off for a week and had unplugged the monitor for that duration (punishing my son). Other than that everything was working great .
Anyone else?

Heres a guess. You had said that you unplugged the monitor at the time for a week while punnishing your son,. I'm wondering if the video card is seated properly. Try pulling it out and re-seating it. Hope this helps. _________________ Failure: When your best just isn't good enough.

Sounds like a driver issue if Windows doesn't show up. Have you tried safe mode? _________________ Extreme Computer Systems
