Howdy y'all!
I want to get our family's website up and running again -- too much heat from the grandparents to make any other decision viable! But the host that we were using is now going out of business. The fellow running it is a friend and has recommended a couple of different places. Does anyone have any advice, recommendations, or other perls of wisdom that you could offer?
Here are the hosts we are considering:
Startlogic
http://www.startlogic.com/
1500 gig of disc space, unlimited domains hosted
Bluehost
http://www.bluehost.com/
Allows 1500 gig of disc space, 1 domain, but unlimited add on and parked domains
Question #1: What are add-on and parked domains?
A free drag and drop site builder.
Hostgator
https://secure.hostgator.com/
Has packages with disc space of 350,000 mb & one domain name; 600,000 mb & unlimited domains; and 1,000,000 mb & unlimited domains(substantially more expensive).
A site builder.
Has only linux webhosting packages -- windows coming soon!
Question #2: Does this mean that you can only up load from a linux os?
They all have similar packages. All support some versions of FP addons. All have similar prices.
Question #3: Are the site builders that come with webhosts a replacement for FrontPage or DreamWeaver? If so, are there significant disadvantages or advantages?
Question #4: The wife seems to think that Dreamweaver is too complicated and difficult to even consider. We've used FrontPage in the past and found it easy to use. Is it worth the time and effort and expense to learn Dreamweaver -- ours is a simple text, photo, and link site -- no fancy java scripts or anything else thank you.
Any advice, encouragement, insight that you can give is much appreciated.
CJ

Do your research at http://www.webhostingtalk.com/
One webhost I've heard of in the niche you are looking at is:
http://www.dreamhost.com/
nearly free speech has "pay as you go" hosting, but does not provide frontpage extensions.
https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/about/faq.php#ASP
For the prices you are looking for, most hosts won't be offering much technical support.
If FrontPage extension are important to you, make sure the host offers them at no extra charge.
You don't need to pay much attention to hard drive storage, or bandwidth limits, since you probably won't be using them up for a family site.

- It's more complicated than this, but basically a parked domain is another name for the same site, and an addon domain a new name using the same hosting package.

- Linux hosting means that the web host runs on the Linux Operating System. You can use any operating system to upload to it though. You just need networking and ftp.
- Usually they are very limited templates, and other starter packages. They are typically okay for getting a quick site up, but will become a hindrance later on if you try to expand.
- It's up to you. I'm generalizing here, but Frontpage is for regular people, and Dreamweaver is for advanced stuff. Pick one and stick to it, because if you start a site with one and try to finish it in the other, you may see incompatibilities.=

The point about FrontPage extension support is an important one. If they don't advertise it, they don't have it. And you cannot run a web page developed in FrontPage without it. Linux (Apache) does not have it, you need only look at Windows servers for that. Not because your computer is Windows, but because of FrontPage support. _________________ Websplasher website design. Howdy y'all!
Thanks again for the advice and thoughts about the webservers. Since we use FrontPage, for better or worse, it's what I know... I found out that FrontPage 2003+ dispenses with the use of extensions, so it all turned out to be a moot point. I'm very happy with the service we're using. I don't know about posting them here, so won't but if anyone's interested, just contact me.
Thanks,
CJ
