Hello my name is John,
Ive been around for a bit coming here for all my computer problems and i always get a solution that i can rely on to work.
But anyways, I have a 4 year old Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop. I randomly shuts off alot, no matter what im doing on it. Ive pretty much come to the conclusion its an overheating problem, it will get really hot near the vents on the side and shut off. Sometimes it only lasts like 15 mins before it goes...but usually i have a little fan pointed right at the side of it and it will last a few hours before it gets soo hot it shuts off.
I have not taken this apart as i fear i will further damage something, im more savvy with desktops than laptops when it comes to computers. Im guessing the heatsync is blown and its not cooling itself off properly.
My question is, do i invest in a new computer or seek out repair on this one?

Ultimately that depends on what objective and subjective criteria you use to make similar decisions and is a decision you will have to make - no two people make these decisions the same way.
The decision is clouded by the fact that you don't know exactly what is wrong with the machine and you don't know what it will cost to fix it.
Most people would start with an economic analysis of alternatives. The method you use may depend on whether you are using the computer for business or for personal use.
If the repair costs more than the computer is worth or what it would cost to replace with a comparable machine, then the decision is obvious. If the repair cost is less, then you might factor in other criteria such as how long the repaired computer is expected to last, technical obsolesence, loss of service while the machine is being repaired, cost of disposing the old computer, time spent transferring programs/data from the old to the new machine, difference in energy use between the two machines, etc etc etc.

Sure sounds like the heatsink is no longer making good contact. The BIOS may well include temperature settings that give real-time temp readings. Alternatively you might find a utility to do the same from the OS you're running. Of course you could take it to a repair shop and they should be able to diagnose it and give you an estimate for repair and go from there. I would think that cleaning, re-pasting, and reseating the heatsink shouldn't take more than a couple of hours.
