I don't know the details, but it's one of the BOINC projects, like SETI@home See http://folding.stanford.edu/ for details.

Hi BigFelix, I'm glad you asked. Notice the "Green Spinny Thingy" under my uname? That is the coveted emblem of the Team CastleCops Distributed Computing Folding@Home Team. Oh! Of course I've heard of this project. To me, the "green spinny thing", as you put it, always looked like the 3-D model of a molecule (with all of the atoms colored green). And, by golly, it is!
