Is or is not ZA 7.0.462 compatible with Vista?

No, it is not. The 7.1 versions are designed for Vista.

I could've sworn when I dl'd 7.0.462 that it *said* it was Vista compatible, but darned if I couldn't get it to install on my friend's new Vista computer. Now that I know there's a newer version out there, I'll go get it. Thanks.

It's not a newer version, it's a different version: 7.1 for Vista, 7.0 for anything else.
7.1 is a bit hard to find on the Zonelabs website; try another download location such as Majorgeeks.com, Filehippo.com, or Download.com

I'm reading reviews that aren't too rosy for the Vista version of ZA. So, before I actually install it, am I setting my friend up for the BSOD? or worse?

Taking a full backup is always a good idea before installing "risky" software.

Since I've been using ZA for years (both free and pro), normally I wouldn't consider it "risky" (except I've had some of the ...unusual... problems with 7.0.462 pro that I've seen others talking about in forums), but it seems that everything associated with Vista is complicated and uncertain.
Do *you* feel ZA (free) is risky on a Vista machine?

I have been using it with no problems, and very few problems are showing up on the ZoneAlarm forums.
There is one suggestion I do have to keep the problems that do show up occasionally from happening. Turn off UAC until after the reboot after the install. Once it is installed and rebooted, you can turn it back on.
There is one other problem that has shown up like 6 times or so, and that is the backup button in ZA doesn't work. But copying the internet logs folder does the same. _________________ For ZoneAlarm help http://www.donhoover.net

Thanks Hoov. The installation went off without a hitch.
