|
|
I have a problem with Ad-Aware 2007. When performing a full scan, the program gets to about 85% complete and freezes with the hourglass on. Clicking on "stop scan" or anything else on the program produce no action. It appears that no activity is taking place in the program. The only option is to click the "X" to close the program - with no scan taking place!
I can run "Smart Scan" and it appears to work just fine, but I have this inability to run a Full Scan. I have Ad-Aware updated with all definitions and am running the latest version of the program. I'm running this on a WinXP machine with all the latest updates.
What could be causing this problem and how do I fix it so I can get "full" use of the program and perform "Full Scans"?
Thanks

do you have an AV running too? It also scans whatever file AA does and maybe hits a big zip file and stalls both progs

I turned off Norton AntiVirus and ran the Full Scan. It worked this time. So, apparently there is some sort of conflict between the two. It would seem to me that these software vendors (applications and security programs) would work together to test to see if their programs works with each other prior to releasing - and not just use the term "turn off your security program" to run other programs successfully! Defeats the purpose of security programs if you have to turn them off to run applications. It would seem to me the application program would initiate dialog with the security vendor to resolve conflicts?

I don't know what to tell you other than that interference (I prefer that term to conflict) of this type is rather common. I was able to configure NOD32 to work acceptably with Counterspy but not with Ad-Aware SE.
As Ad-Aware scans it creates temporary files. Your AV likely wants to scan files as they are created so essentially scans the system in tandem with Ad-Aware. I am not sure why this stops the scan rather than simply prolonging it in your case but would be willing to bet that this is what is happening. _________________

I understand your point, but that being the probable case, why would not Ad-Aware developers work with Symantec to come up with a workaround solution, so their clients are not impacted (that is what developers do, isn't it?), instead of leaving up to clients to figure it out and disable software when they need to run Ad-Aware?

I am not disagreeing with your premise. It would be wonderful if all the companies worked together to eliminate this sort of interference and even provided compatibility settings for each. Unfortunately they don't.
This is one reason that I will tell others what apps I use but won't suggest a "best" in any category. It may run really well for me, on my system, in my configuration, but may cause them no end of grief. _________________

I here for the same reason. Run Adaware Free full scan and it hangs at about 80%. Time keeps running but nothing happening.
Have to end program from task manager to get out of it. Then if I try to reopen it without a soft boot it says their is a core engine error and that the scanner is running!
I am not running anything Noton. (Been there done that before - got the burn scars to prove it!
I tried uninstalling the 2007 Free and then installing the 2008 Free ad aware. Same issues.
I am running AVG 7.5 Antivirus, and didn't try disabling the antivirus before running the full scan. So maybe I will try that next.

Full scan does work but -
I have just gone through a full scan successfully but found that the 'nprotect' folder is extending the scan. The full scan took 5.75 hrs to finish. I do not have Norton installed any longer (removed 2004) but the 'nprotect' folder is still there. Mine is 266 MB. I believe it can be removed but only under DOS.
Lavasoft are aware of the problem as I have been working on it. _________________ regards, Peter.
