|
|
I have Ad-Aware SE Plus and I find I can no longer get updates. Have been reading some of the posts here closely related to my issue, especially Corrine's Sticky on "Freezing/Hanging-up". I am not sure if my problem is the same. When I try to update I get "Error retrieving update". I need advice: Since I can not follow/cannot understand Corrine instructions (at age 90 this computer contraption is very confusing), am I better off just deleting, doing away with the Ad-Aware program all together - rather than running the risk of losing all of the junk I have in my computer? Thanks in advance.

Hi, Oldfella!
All versions of Ad-Aware SE have reached the end of support and none will update automatically through the user interface.
You can still manually obtain updates by visiting the Lavasoft Research Blog. In the upper right hand corner you will see two buttons, one for 2007 and one for SE. Clicking the one for SE will download the latest defs in a .zip file. Once downloaded, unzip the file to \Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\ where it will overwrite the existing defs.ref file.
Sorry that I don't have better news. _________________

Thanks Oldfrog - Except for my jackets and pants, I have no idea how to "unzip" a file. Do you have any suggestions as to an alternate program which will do the job, especially a freebie? Regards.

Which version of Windows are you using? If XP, you can simply navigate to the downloaded .zip file (defs.zip) and right click on it. From the context menu select Open and you should be able to see the defs.ref file. You can then copy it to \Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal\ _________________

I couldn't get it done Oldfrog - I've removed it instead. Can you suggest a suitable substitute, a freebie, maybe. Thanks.
