Adding even more insult to injury, the following:

http://www.radaronline.com/from-the-magazine/2008/05/government_surveillance_homeland_security_main_core_01.php

"The Last Roundup" - "According to a senior government official who served with high-level security clearances in five administrations, "There exists a database of Americans, who, often for the slightest and most trivial reason, are considered unfriendly, and who, in a time of panic, might be incarcerated. The database can identify and locate perceived 'enemies of the state' almost instantaneously." He and other sources tell Radar that the database is sometimes referred to by the code name Main Core. One knowledgeable source claims that 8 million Americans are now listed in Main Core as potentially suspect. In the event of a national emergency, these people could be subject to everything from heightened surveillance and tracking to direct questioning and possibly even detention."

Now - I can't vouch for the veracity of the above (first time I've ever heard of them), but I can tell you that it sounded about right.

So much so, that I FAX'ed every single member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence http://intelligence.house.gov/memberlist.aspx (both at their Washington and main-home-office FAX numbers) questioning them about it (I also sent links to the story to DrudgeReport, CNN, FOX, MSNBC, FAS, etc.) in the hope of getting them interested in digging further - so, hopefully, we'll hear some more about it one way or the other. Pete
