I have N360 V2.3.0.9, protection updates current (19-jun-2008), with Add-on Pack Version 2.1.0.55, running on XP SP3.

I have both Administrator and Limited User ids on my system. The problem I have is that in the administrator id all is well and Norton 360 shows a green flag but when logged in to any of my Limited user ids, Norton 360 is red flagged with the notice that Intrusion Prevention is disabled and requires fixing. Further, I also remotely support a relative's PC overseas, and it has exactly the same problem with Limited user ids on that system.

Both systems scan virus free and have been scanned with Norton 360, AVG, and remote McAfee (web) and remote Norton scans - all clear. The problem seems to lie in Norton 360.

I have consulted with Norton support and they are unable to resolve the problem. All they ever tell me to do is to uninstall and reinstall the product - which does not fix the problem (I also used the Norton cleaner to ensure a clean install).

Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks.

try changing, temporarily, limited user to admin user. Then enable intrusion detection under they logon. Return the permissions back to limited.

If it is still not working although annoying the computer security is not impacted in a manner that should cause you any concern.

Gracias Cudni.
Thank you for replying. I had already tried that as a solution. The N360 status is green in all Admin privilege ids. So when I change the access level of an id from Limited User to Admin User and log in again, the status is green and shows no error flags/conditions. Changing the account back to Limited User privileges, and logging in to the id, and the error flag reappears that Intrusion Detection/Prevention is disabled.
I did try searching the registry but only found one reference to Intrusion with a Norton key, and that key was in the Local Machine hive and not the user id hive.
Cordialmente

Hi galan,

This is Mike from the Norton Authorized Support Team.

There are a few things that may be causing the problem you are experiencing with Norton 360 and limited user accounts.

The first thing to check is to make sure that you do not have any other antivirus or internet security suite installed, as they can cause conflicts with Norton 360. If you do have any other 3rd party antivirus or internet security applications installed, please remove them from your computer and then manually run LiveUpdate from within Norton 360.

If you installed Windows XP Sp3 while Norton 360 was already installed, you may need to follow the additional steps outlined in the following document to resolve this issue.

Upgrading to Windows XP Service Pack 3 or Windows Vista Service Pack 1 with Norton 360 2.0 installed

The other possible issue is that the Symantec Services are not starting up properly. Please follow theses steps to check that the Symantec services are started and set to Automatic.

1. Click Start->Run and then type in "services.msc" (without the quotes)

2. When the Services window appears, click on the "Name" column to sort the processes by name.

3. You will now want to locate the following Symantec processes:

"Symantec Core LC"
"Symantec Event Manager"
"Symantec LIC NetConnect Service"
"Symantec Network proxy"
"Symantec Settings Manager"

Double-click on each of the services and make sure they are started and set to "Automatic." If you do make any changes to the services, make sure that you click the 'Apply" button and then the 'OK" button.

After you have changed the services, please restart your computer and then log in to the limited user account and see if the problem is gone.

Please reply back to this thread and let me know which, if any of the services I listed above were disabled when you checked them. Also, let me know if this process resolves the issue with the limited user account.

Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your reply.

To answer your points:
a) No, I do not have any other security products running on my system;
b) I had already downloaded and run the regfix, and it stated there was not a problem with the registry entries - so SP3 update was not an issue;
c) I checked all of the services you identified and all are already set to Automatic start, and all have been Started.

regards,
Galan

Hi Galan,

Thank you for the update.

Please check the version of Norton 360 that you have installed by opening Norton 360, clicking once on the "Help & Support" link at the top of the window and then choosing "About."

The current version should say version "2.3.0.9"
Please let me know what version you have installed.

Next, please try disabling all of the Add-ons in Internet Explorer except for the "Symantec Intrusion Prevention" Add-on.

Also, clear all of the Windows Temporary files as well as all temporary internet files from your system. After you make these changes, restart your computer, log in to the limited account and let me know if the problem persists.

Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mike,
As I indicated in my first post, the version of N360 I had running was indeed V2.3.0.9. I have just checked again and now the version number is V2.3.1.4; dat files date is 03 Jul 08; and the Add-On pack version number is V2.1.0.55 (same as first post).

I disabled all Add-Ons in Internet Explorer listed in the four views of the drop-down menu: Add-ons used by IE, Add-ons currently loaded, Add-ons that run without requiring permission, and Downloaded ActiveX controls (32 bit). The only add-on I left enabled was as you indicated - the Symantec Intrusion Prevention one.

I shutdown the machine and restarted Windows. Logged into Limited id, and no change - 2 error indicators: the original Intrusion Protection one, plus the Anti-Phishing one (which you would expect as the IE for Anti-Phishing add-on was disabled per instructions).

Hi galan,

Thank you for updating me. I apologize that you are still experiencing problems with the limited user account and Norton 360. To assist you further I would like to escalate your issue to one of our technicians who will contact you. Please check your Private message box for instructions.

Thank you,
Mike

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the reply. I tried sending you a private message, twice, and the messages are both just sitting in the/my Outbox and going nowhere. Is it possible that it is not resolving your id address? If I send a PM to myself it shows up in my inbox...
Thanks.
