|
|
Hi everyone,
got a bit of a problem with my aunt's computer. She just bought a refurbished IBM Pentuim 4, 1.6ghz, a week ago. It has a 40 gig harddrive, 256 mb ram, nvidia video card, and came with a key for windows xp home. I own a legal copy of windows xp home, w/sp2 on it, and i borrowed a legal copy of xp home sp1 from a friend. When i use my cd to format and the key that came with the computer, it goes thru the install and when it re-boots for the first time where you don't go to the cd, it blue screens with a 0x0000007F error. I have formatted it 3 times now and same result. So now i format with my friends cd, it does the format and install and boots and all is well, until it comes time to install sp2. I have already validated the installation, and it validated fine. sp2 installs and on reboot, same blue screen. I cannot install any other windows componants without service pack 2 nor can i install the new avg. Is there something i'm missing here, and why is service pack 2 making this machine crash? I have had this computer running and rebooting on the install without sp2 for 2 days now, and its fine right up and until i install sp2. Oh btw, it will boot into safe mode with sp2, but not normal mode.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, she was hoping to have her computer this weekend and its not looking good right now, lol.
thanks

I cannot think why SP2 is doing that, but why not try to go directly to SP3?

Hi, i tried going to sp3, but you have to have all windows updates to install that, including sp2.
I will try again to get updated bios drivers, i was looking and will continue to look.
Thanks and if anyone thinks of something else i'm not thinking of, that would be awesome.

Hi
I followed your link and all it gives me is overview files, a word document, a pdf file, and some other xps or something file, not the actual download. I cannot find a download for sp3 except for network/it professionals for multiple computers that specifically says to not download for a single computer, but to go thru windows update to get the file, which makes me download sp2 before i can go any farther, lol. its a vicious circle i think, lol. I am still reading what anyone can give me as i want this computer finished, lol.
At this moment, i have flashed the bios and am trying to install sp2 again, seeing if flashing might make it go...haha, but we'll see what happens and will post back shortly.

All the parameters are 0 in the brackets. I'm gettin ready to heave this machine, i have never had a problem like this before. Can someone come up with something i can try? LOL

Yes, i tried installing sp1, and still got blue screened on sp2. I also tried that sp3 for the it profesionals, and it told me i could not install it until all the other sp's and updates were installed. Anything else, lol.

So your original Windows install CD is XP without any service pack? If you have still some time to spare, you could try to make a slipstreamed XP-SP3 install CD. Google will show you many informative pages on how to slipstream an install CD.

Hi, i have 2 copies of xp home, one which is mine with sp2 incorporated into it, the other, i assume does not have xp2 on it. When i used my cd, with sp2 as the install cd, i got the blue screen at the first reboot after the install. When i used the other cd w/o sp2, it fully installed and will run, right up until the updates tries to put sp2 on it, then it crashes on reboot. It goes so far as to say please wait on the first blue screen for the sp install, then crashes.

Ok, so, today i speant 2 and half hours on the phone with micrsoft trying to resolve this, only to have my friend tell me to uninstall sp2 and boot normal. Then he gives me a link to go and download sp2 while he is on the phone, and install it, and have it blue screen, again, and he thought that maybe the windows update version of sp2 was corrupt some how, but not so. So, now i sit and wait for the next level technician to call me back and help resolve this. call should have came 2 hours ago, from what i was told.
Has anyone heard if there is a patch/update specific to resolving sp2 install issues? I'm thinking this is the trouble, because it runs fine w/o sp2, and in safe mode. Maybe some kind of device driver update or something, being as the copy is older? am i grasping at straws now, cause this is driving me crazy. I have a feeling its something simple, disabling a device driver or something just let the install finish. Ran into same type of thing with a Vista install on a new laptop. I just don't know where to start looking.
