I don't even know if it's legal for me to ask this question. Or if it's legal to answer it, for that matter! But here goes....
I have recently had several DVD's returned to me from family that are damaged fairly noticeably, and my question is this:
Is it legal to make backup copies of your movies for this reason? And if so, is there free (or affordable) software available for this purpose?

It appears that it is illegal to make a copy of a commercial movie DVD that has a CSS anti-copy mechanism:
