Two points on this for help please.
I downloaded the new 8.0.100 version a few weeks ago and after three days the automatic update stopped. So I have been manually updating daily.
I have found that a later version 8.0.101 has been issued so I installed, asking for a repair as I have been told that some elements have become corrupted.
Looking at the AVG details on the screen the latest version is installed, but still it does not automatically update.
Also I have been into the AVG free forum, but can't registar, it says I must do this by selecting "Registar Online" from the Help menu, but this heading is not in the Help menu on my screen.
Questions
1 Any idea how I can overcome the Registration issue
2 Any ideas on how to get the Automatic update working, the AVG instructions for Reinstall say I should not run this but Save onto the desktop, I am not confident that I know what this means.
Any ideas would be helpful

You can only register on AVG's forums if you are using the free version of AVG. Seems silly to me but that's the way it is. Paid users have access to e-mail support which free users don't.
"Save onto Desktop" really means save the downloaded file to your computer. It's up to you where you actually save it. Saving files to your Desktop is sometimes recommended as it makes finding the downloaded file quicker and easier. The important thing is not to execute the file directly from a download but to save it first.
I'm not sure why you had an option to "repair" as the installation program should have detected that you were trying to install a new version. If you haven't already I would completely un-install AVG, reboot and then re-install the latest version. Hope that helps.

Sorry johnoo, I got the version numbers mixed up!
I think http://free1.grisoft.com/ww.registration might help.

You might like to mention that in their forum ...
Something you could check out on your AVG:
Open AVG User Interface from the icon in the systray (bottom right of your screen) and go to Tools, Advanced Settings in the menu at the top. Click the '+' sign next to Schedules in the left hand pane. Click on Virus Database Update and Program Update in turn and make sure that 'Run at a specific time' is checked and set the time to something like 4.00 am. Then check 'Run on computer startup if task has been missed'. Click OK and close the AVG window.
It is likely that the task will be missed unless you are an early riser, so the updates should occur during (or just after) bootup.
By the way, saving the download to the Desktop is perfectly acceptable, in fact I save my downloads to a separate folder as a matter of course. If you run the downloaded file immediately it will install AVG correctly but you will not be able to access the installation program again. Saving to the Desktop ensures that you can run the installer whenever you need to. _________________ Never stop learning

Well I checked that out! I do not have a + next to the Schedule icon, so I can't click on it.I have tried to do a screen print to show you this, but this forum does not allow attachements in Open Office format(ODT) or PDF files.
I am now slightly lost!

Think I've found a way of attaching the screen print so thought I would. You can see no + next to Schedule hence I can't get into the schedule mode.

Aha! We found that out in another thread.
Have you tried running the installer and selecting 'Repair' as opposed to 'Install'? _________________ Never stop learning

The only thing I have found so far that may help is this thread in the AVG Free forums.
Scroll down to the last post (by Big Al 43) and read the second half of that post after "If that doesn't help.... ".
That process recommends removing the User Settings which is something we haven't tried yet. _________________ Never stop learning

I am coming to this conclusion to, that I must reinstall.
But the method stated in the link concerns me, it says
1 Run Install file
2 Choose uninstall
3 reboot
4 Install
i would have thought that the most logical way was to uninstall and then reinstall then reboot
Am I right?
I need to get my confidence up before doing this, and i have not got a shoulder to cry on if things go wrong!

No - it is best to reboot after uninstalling and before reinstalling.
When the uninstaller runs, all the services related to AVG are forcibly terminated, files are removed and registry entries amended and deleted. With all that going on, your system is left in an 'unusual' state. Rebooting makes sure everything is reset to a known state before installing again. (In fact, it is possible to load a program into memory and have it run in the background even after the program file has been deleted).
Similarly, it is best to reboot after installing a program. That way all the startup entries in the registry relating to that program will be dealt with in the correct manner and in the correct order.
So uninstall, reboot, install, reboot is the correct order.
And you can come back and yell at me if things go wrong _________________ Never stop learning

Mister2,
Thanks for your help, I intend to uninstall/reinstall but not yet!
I have now managed to registar at the AVG forum by using the thread given by Paulw2, and they state that it is the NV firewall that is causing the AVG scheduling/update problem.
As they have not cured this problem, and doing a manual update only takes two clicks per day I think I should wait untill a revised version becomes available.
When I do this,I may even pluck up courage and do it before a new version is released just to see if it gives the auto update, I will let you know the result, and cry for more help!

That's interesting - thanks for letting us know about the firewall problem.
Keep us posted when you get the next program update - I would hope this problem is addressed quickly. _________________ Never stop learning
