Hello All, new to computer cops.

I have Norton AV 2000 V6, i have tried the symantec website for weeks now, cannot find a cure, hope you can help????

I had to uninstal Norton as i had problems with it, the first i have really had since 2000 when i started using it.

I am having trouble opening programs, most open, though slower, my internet broadband is slower, i try to run PestPatrol and others to check and they stop scanning 3/4's of the way through and i have to cont-alt-delete or reboot.

I investigated it for awhile, and found the problem to be Norton's Auto protect, when i Disable it, faster internet, programs open normally, and Scans for Pests etc complete normally.

I have tried online virus scans, and trojans, as well as Norton and pestPatrol, i have used Spybot, and others to make sure as much as i can, it is not a Pest that is causing the problem.

Exclamation I need help re:this, cannot sort the problem out.

I have Windows 98se, 256MB ram, 13Gig H/Drive, 7.5 free.

No real problems bar this one.

If this is not in the correct forums, can you transfer to the correct one, and post a link in a reply to this. Confused

Thanks, GEP

Sounds to me that you need an AV Real Time Monitor that does not hog all your RAM. Norton is famous for hogging RAM and CPU usage. (My apologies to those who love Norton.)

Why not use the RTM of a different AV product? You can still keep/use the Norton simply as an on-demand AV scanner, with the AutoProtect disabled of course.

I have only a 128 MB of RAM on my box, yet I have security programs that do the job without sucking all the RAM. My CPU usage is usually less than 10% and that's with everything running online!

I would suggest using something like Antivir Free Personal Edition. It has a RTM, called AVGuard, which you can run seperately from the main program when you are online. Antivir virus definitions are updated daily. The application program is updated weekly.

Another free AV with a good RTM is AVG Free by Grisoft.

Just do not run more than one active AV at a time and everything will be fine. Wink

Best regards and Welcome to Computer Cops! Very Happy

Hello Prince Serendip and all,
Thanks for your reply, prince.

I know all the alternatives having explored them, but, i want to if possible to keep Norton on my system, just wondered if someone knows the cure?

Further information.

It says there is not enough memory to run some programs, when i have enough, not had this problem before.

Removed by msconfig all unwanted ones, and freed my hard drive of unwanted programs, as well as the usual defags, scandisks, temp folders etc.

I have tried uninstalling it and reinstallion twice, still the same problem.

Also, i have not got the intelligent updater anymore in control panel.

Any ideas??

Thanks, GEP
