I have had Norton SystemWorks 2003 for a long time (I have Windows XP Home (updated with the latest patches) on a 2.2 GHz desktop PC), and have configured the NAV module to check for virus def updates and NSW 2003 program updates automatically and to notify me if there are any (as opposed to downloading and installing them without my knowledge). My Task Scheduler runs "Netdetect" every 2 hours (system does not have to be idle). Whenever new stuff was found, an icon flashed in my system tray/notification area alerting me something new was available and I could check on-line when convenient.

Some time ago, I can't remember when (it was probably after a Symatec update or after I installed software, but I have no memory of which, if either), the NAV icon in the system tray stopped flashing (I noticed after about 4 days of non-flashing). Now, I can manually check for updates using Live Update and everything works perfectly that way.

When I checked Task Scheduler (and I've double checked NetDetect's configurations in Task Scheduler (I made sure no boxes were checked on the "settings" tab page and that the task was "enabled") to make sure they're correct), I can see where NetDetect has "run" at a certain time (i.e., "last run at ...") yet immediately after it has run, on some occassions when I check for updates manually via Live Update, I find updates (and download and install them without a hitch). For some reaons, LiveUPdate is checking Symantec's server, but when finding updates, not notifying me via the flashing icon in the system tray.

Does anybody recognize this situation? I'm adverse to uninstalling NSW 2003 and reinstalling it just for this issue, since manually checking for updates works fine. I checked Symantec's NSW Knowledge Base but couldn't find anything on this particular issue. Jay

K027,

I followd the article you cited, but the problem persists. Thanks for alerting me to it nontheless.

I just received a reference from Symantec NAV tech support to Document ID: 2001082115564506 located at http://service1.symantec.com/Support/sharedtech.nsf/docid/2001082115564506

and have follow the directions; hopefully the next update to the virus definitions will result in the flashing "update" icon in my system tray like used to be the case on this PC, and like occurs on my laptop with NSW 2003. Nella
