Hello djohn3853,
Download and install Belarc Advisor:
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
This will provide key information about your computer's hardware/software, including software firewalls, if any.

OK, I installed Belarc and ran it. There's a lot of info there but I don't see anything about firewall. I know for a fact I don't have any aftermarket firewall, so the only thing possible would be through my router or cable modem (gee, can you tell I don't know what i'm talkin bout). I remember when I first setup my network of 3 computers I had trouble seeing the other 2 til I did something with firewall. Don't remember what I did though.

Go to the symantec web support and search on antivirus off , email error. It will probably recommend de-install re-install. I would run adaware and check for spyware first, disconnect from web and run antivirus wouldn't hurt. When you re-install NAV password enable it if not already done. Last spyware hit on my machine did same thing to NAV. Haven't had issue with spyware messing up my NAV since it's been password enabled.

The same thing happened to me and after some investigating, I found out it was because I had installed Symantec's SystemWorks 2003 after installing Norton Anti-Virus 2004, even though I told it not to install the Anti-Virus software included in SystemWorks.
This actually, after a few updates from Symantec, breaks the Anti-Virus software somehow. It even occurs when using other Symantec software. The trick is to install all other Symantec Software first, and their Anti-Virus software last, then do the updates.
I uninstalled and reinstalled, then re-updated Norton Anti-Virus 2004 from my system and all is fine now. I've been running 3 weeks with multiple updating without error.
Try that for a solution.

Okay, my autoprotect is also having issues, and I get the same error message. I am to the point of reinstalling. I have not installed 2003 after 2004, and my soundcard programs have been shut down, and my msconfig has been set and reset, set and reset to the point where XP has no idea what the hell to do when it boots up.
So, guide me here as I do a clean install this weekend of Symantec Utilities 2004. What am I supposed to do with password Manager, which I do not use anyway? You want me to load all the other software first, then do the antivirus, and then load updates?
This is a dumb question, but in Norton Utilties, do I have a choice as to what is loaded first and last? Thanks so much.
