Hi shoedoc,
A little maintenance would help from two angles. First, you'd get to see whether there is an improvement or not. Secondly, if no improvement, there'd be an indication of what else might be the problem.
Before you start this, check to see if there are any programs you no longer want or you wish to be rid of. If you have any, ditch them first or, copy them to a storage medium.
Perform a disk clean up. Go start->my computer->right click on C: drive->select properties->Disk clean up-> a Gui will appear with a slection of what can be deleted. make your choice from the list, clicking on each item will give a brief description of whats what. when decided, put a check in each of your chosen boxes and go.
Defrag your Hard Drive, a good tidy up works wonders. Go start->my computer-> right click on HDD; usually C: drive->select properties->Tools-> Defrag. Sit back and watch or make a brew. Take a look at the before and after to see the difference.
After that, error check the HDD and have it set to fix as it runs. Go start-> my computer->right click On C: drive as before-> select properties->Tools->check now->in the GUI that opens, put a check mark in the lower box-> start. follow the prompts. Do not attempt to interfere with this process, just let it run it's course. It will take some time to complete.
Come back when done and let us know how your system is running.
