Hi everyone!

Sorry to bother you, but I am having a problem with Ad-Aware for quite some while now. Every time I try to scan my computer (Latest updates, not just my computer having this problem) it stops after approximately 113,643 (EDIT: I was bored. Did another scan. 107,449 this time.) files. The program just stops responding: I can shut it down via the Task Manager.

I will be so grateful to the person who can help me. I have got no idea what's going wrong. At both computers it is around the same number where it crashes. Has anyone ever had this problem before?

My Ad-Aware: 6.0 Personal, Build 6.181. It appears to be the latest version.

tmaster,

Have you updated Ad-Aware lately? You should have Build 01R314 02. 06. 2004. Ensure you have this latest build via update.

Then, get Ad-Aware Cloak from the top of this forum and use following the instructions. Run Ad-Aware and see if it completes scan when used in conjunction with 'Cloak'.

Thanks for your response, Mariner!

At the time of the scan last night, I had reference file 01R314 02.06.2004. Same as what you were saying.

OK, I hadn't tried AA-Cloak yet, because I thought it would only enable Ad-Aware (to run with certain spyware applications installed). Just tried it, and it didn't work. (EDIT: Scanning my system, I mean. The cloak itself seemed to function properly.) Isn't this a common problem? It's the second PC that it doesn't work on, you would say that people would have noticed it before. Couldn't find anything, though.

Has anyone got another idea?

Thanks for the help, but eventually I found out what was wrong. In another forum I read about a problem with scanning archives. I deactivated the scanning of ZIP-files, and it went flawlessly. Next, I tried every folder, sometimes in groups (ZIP-scanning activated). There appeared to be only one folder that had this issue. I moved the ZIP-files to two other folders, and kept splitting the files in the folder that caused the problem. In the end, only one file was left, which caused Ad-Aware to stop responding (6+ hours, during the night). The ZIP-file wasn't entirely normal. I will post a bugreport to the Ad-Aware forums (including more details), since no file at all should cause a program to stop responding, normal or not.

Notes:
- The Ad-Aware cloak mentioned earlier functioned properly. It did not help with this particular problem, though. (and in my opinion this is normal behavior)
- I haven't tried the second PC yet, but I assume it has the same problem, since it is very likely to carry the same file.
- I have always scanned with the latest version of Ad-Aware combined with the latest reference file.

Thank you for your help.

N. B. I am unfamiliar with your board policies, but if you usually lock threads after the problem has been resolved, it can be locked now.

Hi tmaster,

Pleased to hear you got it sorted out. Must have taken you a while but was a sound and methodical approach to finding a solution.

If it's of any use to you -and it would benefit our experts; please feel free to post us a copy of the file in question to this forum:

Thanks.
