I unwittingly changed my W2k work machine from Domain to workgroup to take advantage of my home network. There was a 'Domain' error message but the 'Welcome to' workgroup message appeared and I rebooted as instructed but my password isn't accepted anymore and because of this I can't get in to sort out the Domain problem as (I suspect) I'm not the administrator. Help!!

Does this happen even if you are not connected to the network at logon?

if you boot to safe mode you should be able to log on as the "administrator". go into control panel > users and make your user an administrator. also reset your password.

Just tried it and no, I get a 'boot device not found' error message. This I can understand as it's loaded with W2k. The machine is only a P2 and I did some work for an overseas company a while back and so they aren't interested in it anymore. But I would like to retrieve some of my files and them donate the machine to my daughters Win98 educational games.
I contacted the company and asked humbly for the Administrators password and understandable, they refused.
So, what am I left with. I machine which boots to the logon screen of W2k after loading enough Peer to Peer networking software which allows me to see it on my home network, BUT doesn't accept my uname and password because of the domain problem I didn't fix when I switched to workgroup. Hope this helps, cos I fear I will have to find a way to refomat and accept the loss of files.
Any ideas ...... CC

Do you by any chance have another Win2k or XP system available? If so, you could remove the hard drive from this system and install it as a slave in the other system and retrieve any files that you wished.

I'm not sure if this will help but I have been wondering if you can do it from the command line. I found the following information;

http://www.ss64.com/nt/netdom.html
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=150493
http://www.mcse.ms/message899989.html
http://www.ss64.com/nt/setprfdc.html

I am not sure how much good thay will do you but It was just about all that I could find. A lot seems to depend on what your systems thinks is the PDC.

Another option is to use a boot disk and try to copy your data to another drive.
I have been experimenting with this freeware;

http://www.ntfs.com/products.htm

It looks good but I still have to move my drive to another system and try to recovery some of the data.

BTW, the drive that I am using this on is NTFS WinXP which us unbootable. I have verified that both copies of the file tables are the same but have not been able to access the drive directly. This software runs for a VERY long time but has been able to locate the files so I have hopes that it will also be able to copy. In your case, you only need to bypass the login so it should be OK.

Dame good idea, I know little about Laptop second drives. I've only ever fitted a desktop second drive before. Can you fit a second drive to a laptop, it's so compact, will it fit? The pricipal is sound but is it feasable?

no you can not install 2nd drive in a laptop. you'll need laptop to desktop connectors to install your laptop hard drive into a desktop.
