found this on another board..

problem was as follows :

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've not been able to find a solution to this problem in the archives, so I apologize if this has been rehashed. I am running XP Pro on a custom machine, 2.6 Intel, 512 ram, 80gig hd.
My "stand by" function is greyed out.
When I try to set "power option properties" I get the following message: "Power Policy Manager unable to set policy. Indicates two revision levels are incompatible."
In my bios settings (Phoenx Award Bios)
"sleep state" is set to S1/POS
"power management" is set to user define
"suspend mode" is disabled
"HDD off after" is disabled.
Obviously, I'm missing something, but I cannot figure out how to get the "stand by" function or to set the power policies.
I have read some info that indicates the problem may be in my monitor and/or monitor driver (Samtron 76v) and that it could be incompatible in XP. Any thoughts?

suggestoin is as follows:

thanx for ur help
but the link to microsoft support was not available
any other solutions?

if this helps, every time i start up my comp it 'finds new hardware': video controller (VGA compatible) and S3Inc. Trio3D/2X Display Driver Version 5.30.05 Engineering Release. I try to install them through device manager display adapters but it tells me that they're not compatible with Windows XP.
i read somewhere that someone installed graphic drivers to solve their greyed-out stand by problem.

i don't know where to start or if that's even the right solution for me...
