Good morning, I have a problem that I ahve not been able to fix. I have an old Gateway running Win98. US Robotits 56K modem that I cannot get connect through my dial up. I chekced all the properraties, etc and thay look good as far as I can tell. I use to get an error message of "No dial tone". Now I do not get tha message, but I cannot hear a dial tone. The modem status says it is working fine. The modem will dial the connection number, but I cannot hear it transmitt or ping the server. I changed the phione connection cable, but no luck. We had a Tornado blow thru and we our power want out. I have a surge protector on, but wonder if it fried my modem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as my wife is driving me nutz since I have not been able to fix it.
Thanks,
Aaron

Greetings,

Ace1969
Welcome!

I assume that if you plug a phone/handset into the socket, you can hear a dial-tone!?

If so, your phone line is working.

You say that the modem properties indicates there are no problems - have you checked in Device Manager to ensure that there are no yellow question marks against anything - particularly the modem!?

These will take care of a hardware issue.

The most likely cause is that, in your connection properties, you have not unchecked the "Wait for dial tone" option - uncheck this!

Kindest regards,

Dragan Glas

Dragan Glas, thanks for the ideas. I will try this as soon as I get home tonight. I know it is time for me to replace the complete computer, but the cash just is not there. I hope this works. I replaed the phone cord lastnight, but no good. I'll let ya know.
Thanks,
Aaron

OH, OH!!! I have heard of a lot of fried modems because of folks relying on those surge protectors. I have one but I still keep the computer unplugged in summer (we are in Florida - and Tampa Bay area where we are is referred to as the lightning capital of the world) and shut down if bad weather is threatening (like thunder is the distance).

Modem problems after a storm?
I had lightning fry a modem a few years ago.It damaged the phone line in my case.
Unplug your computer modem from the phone jack if there is a chance for lightning.
I don't trust surge protectors for phone lines/modems.

If you do have to install a new modem,it's not hard to do and the prices are reasonable.
You can get a 56k v92 modem for less than $20.
I just replaced a modem in XP Home computer because the older modem was
connecting at wildly inconsistent rates.
