Ok, I have had so many problems with my computer after I switched to cable. Mainly because of junk downloaded via spy ware, ad ware ,a Trojan virus…….. all that pesky stuff.
Now I believe I have gotten that all fixed thanks your help on the highjack thisforum. Thank you Yellowhammer !!!!!
I have been having a problem with some of my software that needs to Internet access automatically opening the aol sign on screen and wanting to go through aol to get access. Even though I am already online through cable. I am not ready to delete entirely aol from my computer, Mainly because of saved e mail. Is there a way to set my cable assess as my default connection and that I only use aol when I need to.( It came in real handy when explorer kept shutting down on me and the only way to get on to this forum was through aol’s dial-up.)
Any advice would be welcome.
And again thanks for past help.

Windows help when I want to search topic online, Most programs that have the option to go online for information will automaticly go and open my phone modem= aol.
I am now ready to get rid of aol if that is the only option. but I will need help to figure out how to keep old e-mail. ( job realated)
Though I would think there should be a way way of fixing this....

Try going to Internet Options in Control Panel and look under the Connectons tab. You will see your Dial-up and VPN settings in the middle of the display. Make sure that you have selected the Dial whenever a network connection is not present option. If that does not work then try selecting Never dial a connection.
When you go to AOL to check email do you dial or go through the broadband? _________________

Ok, I found Internet options and connections.
I have nothing under dial up and virtual Network connections.(in that box under this heading)
--Under “Choose settings if you need network proxy”
The writing is in gray and “Never dial a connection” is marked.
{I was playing around in this earlier trying to fix this problem]
--Under “Local aria network [LAN] settings is black and there I have marked “ automatically detect settings”
I have done nothing under proxy server because I do not know what that is….

Hmm! You would think that the computer would behave and not dial after you had told it not to.
I have a couple of other ideas, but first
1) When you access AOL can you do it from the broadband or do you have to use the dialup?
2) Do you have any other dial up connections defined other than AOL? _________________

Can you find a way to access AOL by the URL from your broadband? _________________

Yes I can get onto aol through the internet.
I just like the securety features for the kids. plus would like to keep what is stored on my computer in the filing cabenet. I am however willing to delete the whole prgram, after I figure out how to keep that info if need be.

Okay, AOL has a long history of not playing well with others. Still, there has to be a way to lick this thing.
Look in your device manager under Network Adapters and see if there is anything listed besides the one that you are using for broadband. Especially look for anything that might say AOL on it. _________________

Ok, I can’t seem to find my device manager. Ok, you may laugh…
But I did find something that may be interesting. Under phoned and modems I only have my phone modem and a communication between two computers listed.
Though under local aria connections I have the cable modem listed.
Though I found help and glossary for device manager I cant find it itself.
Where should I be looking???

If you are using XP you should find Device Manager under Control Panel|System|Hardware|Device Manager. _________________

Gee, I wish that I knew. Something that we hold very sacred here is to "do no harm". I have always avoided AOL, Compuserve, and others of that ilk like the plague so have no personal experience with it. Let me see if I can find a colleague with another perspective. _________________

Greetings,
kristintf
Welcome!
I had a quick glance at one of your posts in the HJT forum - I see it mentions "Comcast Cable". I've had a quick look at Comcast's site and the information for their Comcast Cable product - I can't see any indication of speed.
Is this just the entertainment product or is it the "High-Speed Internet" product to which you're referring?
I wondered because the "Cable" product doesn't mention anything about internet access, just movies, etc.
Kindest regards,
Dragan Glas
