Sometimes the AVG E-mail Scanner Icon keeps revolving even though no e-mail is being sent or received. It still revolves after the E-mail Program is closed (Pegasus Mail). Computer has to be restarted to clear the icon from the system tray. It does not stop messages being sent or received and viruses are still quarantined OK. Its just anoying. How can I stop this?

Hi OldGiraffe!

Welcome to Computer Cops!

Have you tried right-clicking on the icon?

Worth a try.

Best regards

Hi Prince_Serendip,

Left or right clicking on the rotating icon does nothing even when working normally. Hovering over it always says "sending or receiving e-mails, please wait...." even when, as I said, no e-mail program is running!

I can go into Control Center and disable then re-enable the e-mail scanner to clear the rotating icon so I guess the avgemc483us.exe program keeps running after Pegasus Mail closes - but not always!

Strange don't you think?

OldGiraffe.

Did you try unchecking all the boxes in the Email Scanner tab in the AVG Control Panel?

You can check and uncheck these at your whim. I do it in the Virus Scanner to enable or disable it at need.

Hi,

I assume this is based on the premis that if the Mail Proxy Option has a tick in the Universal E-mail Scanner box and it is running that I do not need to have the basic E-mail Scanner running. Is this true?

As suggested; I have tried running AVG with all the basic E-mail Scanner tabs unticked but I still get the 'rotating icon problem' and it only clears when the computer is restarted. Next time I will look in task manager to try to determine if the Universal Scanner is really running - it could be that XP has kept the Icon active even though the program closed. I will get back to the forum as soon as I have tried this. Meanwhile thanks for the advise so far.

I'm back!

From Task Manager I find that the e-mail scanner [ avgemc ] sometimes continues to run after after all mail has been sent and recieved and sometimes after my Pegasus Email Program is closed.

I can't see what I can do about this so will just continue watching the redundant rotating AVG icon.

Hi OldGiraffe!

From Task Manager you can highlight "avgemc" and then click on End Task or End Process. If a box comes up that says it's busy and do you want to wait?, end it anyway. Do this after you are done with your email. That should stop the rotating icon.

If you want to re-enable it later, here's a work-around I use in such cases. When you are offline and with AVG turned off (right-click on Systray AVG icon and click on Shutdown AVG Control Center) go to the AVG folder and find "avgemc483us.exe." Right-click on it and choose "Create Shortcut." Put the shortcut on your desktop. Then, whenever you turn it off, you can still turn it back on. Wink

Thanks Prince_Serendip,

I have been doing things like that. It's just such a bore.

Don't like closing AVG while online using broadband which works as you say.

Will just ignore the merrygoround from now on.

I can understand lack of support fron Grisoft for free s/w but it's pity they are not interested in feedback!
