Hi:
First time poster here. I would be grateful for your advice. I plan to switch from Norton AV to AVG free. But, I've heard several horror stories about uninstalling NAV and have never changed my AV before--I'm a computer novice who dreads install/uninstall. My main questions are:
1. if I don't uninstall NAV but instead turn off ALL of its active protection (email, active shield) and remove NAV from startup, will AVG install and perform correctly? Or, will AVG conflict with NAV?
2. do I need to disable my firewall to install AVG? If this is necessary, please explain why. While I have to give permission to ZA to allow downloads, ZA has never caused a problem with installation.
3. are AVG virus protection updates regular and easy to install--any problems with them?
Thank you for your comments. System info: WIN ME, NAV, Zone Alarm Free, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster, IE Spyad, Adaware, IE 6, Firefox

Hello CF,
Welcome to CastleCops!

It is recommended to use and install 1 antivirus only to avoid any conflicts. Some users install/use more than 1 antivirus to:
1. Testing - if you are installing AVG to test it only, you can disable all protection of NAV and disallow it to load during start-up then reboot and make sure no NAV component is running/monitoring anything then you may proceed in installing AVG.
2. Use the other antivirus as a backup scanner - I recommend online scanners as a back-up scanner so if you plan to install AVG as a back-up scanner I recommend do not go ahead and use the free online scanners available
If you are decided to replace NAV with AVG, disable Spybot Tea-timer (if enaled). Shouldn't be a problem uninstalling NAV if they are enabled but IMHO if Teatimer is enabled, it is monitoring any changes and will alert you so you might as well disable Teatimer then enable it again after successfully removing NAV.

I've installed/uninstalled many security programs before while ZA is running without a problem so I think there's no need to disable it. Just uninstall NAV while you are disconnected from the internet and/or while installing AVG since AVG installation does not need internet connection.
Note: ZA quarantines suspicious email attachments. Make sure you will disable email protection in ZA after installing AVG because it might caused conflict to have 2 email protection as enabled.

It is being updated frequently. You can configure AVG to check for updates everyday. _________________ It is common sense to take a method and try it; if it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something. --Franklin D. Roosevelt

I just wanted to say thank you, Donna for taking the time to advise me on this matter. I finally got up the nerve to install AVG free and uninstall NAV. All seemed to go smoothly--no errors--and my computer is faster.

Donna,
Great advice on the AVG installation question. This is just a side note concerning ZA E-Mail protection. I'm running AVG 7 Professional with Personal E-Mail Scanner configured to scan incoming and outgoing mail with the Pegasus Mail program. As a test, I've run for long periods with ZA E-Mail protection both enabled and disabled ... and haven't seen a conflict.
Might be overkill ... but they seem to play well together. _________________ Wayward

| Quote: | | I'm interested in your comment about increased system speed after replacing NAV with AVG. I moved from McAfee to AVG quite some time ago and saw a significant improvement in system response time. As I recall, the McAFee system resource problem began with the move from Version 5 to Version 6. |
I forgot to mention that the AVG scans are much faster than NAV's (I had version 2001). Norton scans took over 30 minutes to run! And, with NAV I was having so much trouble with slow performance that on occasion my computer wouldn't boot--it would freeze right before loading the desktop icons. I currently use selective start up. With these problems (and I've heard bad things about WIN ME with NAV 2004), there was no question about not upgrading/renewing.
Another issue with NAV is that, despite the "uninstall successful" messages I got, I am aware of many files and registry entries still out there to be deleted.
