|
|
The icon is desplayed ok, it all seems to be still running in the backround ok too, yet when I hit icon to view process, the screen turns into lines of static such as those we use to see on black & white TV's - except mine are in colour....of course! I then have to restart to get the remainder of the lines off my screen, after I close the folding viewing screen.
As Folding is in the middle of working on a unit, I don't want to uninstall & re-install.
Has anyone got any suggestions?
It's ruffling my feathers.......

Hi Whitedove.
1st, what version are you running?
Is this the first time it has happend?
In my experience, I have had a few strange problems, with F@H, but they usually sort themselves out. In the past, F@H would crash when I clicked on the icon. Now if I right-click to view the team stats page, it has been crashing, although this problem might be attributible to something unrelated.
Some of the team know much more about trouble-shooting than I, and if someone doesn't respond to you soon, I'll go check their forums to see what I can find after I finish up what I'm doing.
If you'd like, you can give it a try and let us know.

Hi seafsee,
fancy being answered by you, doves love the sea....rest on it's waves we do, when flying very long distances.
I appreciate & thank you for you reply
Now to answer some of your questions:
Foldings was installed on my PC on Saturday, 10 July 2004 10:35:49 (my mums birthday )
Version: Folding@home 4.00
Yes 1st time it's happened, which occured about 4 weeks ago.
Sounds very similar to your problem with Folding, did you get anywhere with sorting it out? Like I mentioned I would prefer to keep it going and not uninstall, as it's working through a unit, yet it would be nice to sort the problem out...I'll take your suggestion & go to the forum & see what comes up, we can then compare notes.
Again thanks & I look forward to our next contact regarding this. _________________ Whitedove

The v5.0 label description states that all three NT-based OSes are covered. So v5.0 has been available for three months. Hot damn! I'll have to check it out.

Hi, Whitedove,
I'm not an expert, but I've had the same problem with the coloured lines across the screen with version 4. It hasn't happened (yet!) with version 5, but either way, if I closed F@H's screen view down and relaunched it, most times it would be fine the second time. I'm using Windows 2000, by the way.
If you /do/ uninstall and reinstall (and I think this is best when going from 4 to 5, I had problems installing one over the other), in my case it remembered how far it had progressed with the current work unit and carried right on from there, so no time was lost. There must be a file left after uninstall with the current automatic save point in it.
If this isn't right, one more knowledgable than I will surely say!
All the best, and welcome to the folding team!
Mirin

I iinstalled 5 over 4. The only problems reported here involved the Start Menu and "two" instances would be running. Removing the icon before the upgrade should resolve that problem.
Hi Mirin. I watch you climb the charts weekly and have never seen you hanging around anywhere.

Hi again seafsee, thanks for the invite, I promise to clean up after myself. V5 sounds like the go. I was checking out the stats then my PC crashed, I'm not having a having a good PC day. Thanks for the advise to my problem. I will tackle it first thing in the morning. I had a fellow dove pop in for a visit & now this bird is pooped...it's a little late over here down under.
Hi Ikeb, thanks...did you say "all NT-based OSes? Does that include Windows 98? Did you end up checking it out? Will give it a go tomorrow if 98 is compatible.
Hi Mirin, thanks also to you for the great advise. Yeah...you got to see the lines...spooky wasn't it!!! Good to hear the unit currently being worked on won't be destroyed, after all the effort it's being up to.
My fellow Folding comrades...I will go forth & do as you all suggest tomorrow, I will then post you all the outcome...if it all goes according to "your plans" we'll have to head off to the Tavern for a drink to celebrate _________________ Whitedove

the three NT-based OSes are NT, 2000, and XP. Sorry WhiteDove, 95, 98, and ME can't support v5 at this point.

Hi, Whitedove,
Yes, the coloured lines reminded me of bad experiences with dying monitors back in the days when I worked in the same department as a guy who used 24 hours of Cray time on a protein folding exercise (the entire department's allocation for a whole year!). This Folding at Home method didn't exist back then, of course.
I hope you get the display working! The Folding still works fine without it, and you can check your progress through the statistics site run by the university behind it all, but it /is/ good to watch it chugging through the folding simulation bit by bit.
Seafsee: thanks! I've enjoyed going up the charts, but I think that 6 is the best I'll do - I can't catch the leaders, there are some very fast folders coming up fast behind me, and I'll be declining gracefully pretty soon now. My claim to fame: I was ahead of Tamara_aka_Satchick for ten minutes one Thursday afternoon a few months ago!
All the best,
Mirin

Hi Ikeb, thanks for your response and advise, guess I'll either need to wait or up-date my system.......mmm...food for thought.
Hi Mirim, after I read yours, I figured that if Folding is still running OK, I can as you suggested, still get to see the stats when I want, so I can make do with not seeing the display for now......it was just kinda fun being able to like you said, but that's not the real point now is it? Your adventures working at that department sound like they were fun and also a life time away...your showing your age....or should that be expertise? Thank you for the advise, very much appreciated.
Again thanks to all for your help......you guys are a great bunch.
This bird is off to rest. Nite _________________ Whitedove

I just realized, I've been promoted from cadet to trooper....that means that Folding is all working fine in the backround even if I can't see it, right??
Now I can rest in peace...I mean sleep _________________ Whitedove

Hi, Whitedove,
I think you go from cadet to trooper by posting more messages on this board, it doesn't relate to the running of the folding program.
Yup, I'm an old geezer. Why, I remember as if it were yesterday that we used to (blah, blah, blah).
Your folding program is definitely working; you have your first work unit credit up on the Folding at Home website.
All the best,
Mirin

Thanks Mirin,
I thought as I went to sleep last night that maybe that was the case, so it's good to have you clear it up. Wow promoted for just talking....as long as it doesn't breed dribble in me, I can keep going up the ranks?
So your an old geezer hey??? Your a funny old geezer, you've got a sense of humour, so that makes you a kid in my books
Yes, thanks, I knew I had completed one work unit, I will keep an eye on the stats and see what happens, as it seems to have been working on this one for some time now (or is it ?)
Thanks for your response & all the best to you too. Didn't know geezer was used over your side of the world, here we say "old fart"....go figure???
Can I say that on here? _________________ Whitedove
